The Department of Social Welfare and Development’s (DSWD) Visayas Disaster Resource Center (VDRC) will be dispatching another batch of family food packs (FFPs) to Negros Island on Wednesday (January 15) for the completion of the target 100,000 FFPs for Mt. Kanlaon relief operations.

Disaster Response Management Group (DRMG) Assistant Secretary Irene Dumlao said these food packs will complete the agency’s target to stockpile 100,000 boxes of FFPs prepositioned in warehouses across the island as directed by DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian in the wake of the possible eruption of Mt. Kanlaon.

“We have dispatched over 73,000 boxes of family food packs since last Sunday (January 12). Our VDRC team made sure that we are on-track with the target numbers,” Asst. Secretary Dumlao, who is also the DSWD’s spokesperson, said.

Based on the latest report of the VDRC, a total of 16,500 FFPs are scheduled for dispatch within the day, of which 13,300 boxes will be delivered to storage facilities in Negros Occidental (under Field Office 7 – Western Visayas) while 3,200 packs will go to Negros Oriental (under FO 6 – Central Visayas).

“Upon dispatch, these supplies will meet our target and ensure that we have abundant stockpiles for  disaster-hit local government units (LGUs) and residents,” Asst. Secretary Dumlao pointed out.

The DSWD spokesperson said the agency’s intensified response efforts remain complementary with the preparations led by LGUs in the event that Mt. Kanlaon’s volcanic activity is raised to Alert Level 4.

As part of its continuing role in the management of evacuation centers, the DSWD’s Western Visayas Field Office joined the LGU of La Castellana in Negros Occidental last January 14 in visiting Talaptap Elementary School and Nato Soliguen Elementary School in order to evaluate the potential evacuation centers.

“The assessment included evaluating the availability of classrooms, water and energy sources, and portable toilets to ensure the facilities could adequately support the displaced residents if necessary,” the DSWD spokesperson said.

For its part, the Central Visayas Field Office’s Quick Response Team (QRT) made rounds across evacuation centers in Canlaon City to monitor the condition of the evacuees and ensure sustained aid for their everyday needs.

As of press time, the DSWD has extended Php77.6M-worth of humanitarian assistance to Mt Kanlaon-affected families and individuals from the 27 barangays in Region 6 (Western Visayas) and Region 7 (Central Visayas). (LSJ)
