In an effort to help children in conflict with the law (CICL) cope with their traumatic experiences, the Department of Social Welfare and Development’s (DSWD) Field Office (FO) 6-Western Visayas conducted psychological first aid and other psycho-social processing activities for children-residents of the agency’s Regional Rehabilitation Center for Youth (RRCY) in Guimaras province.

A group of Post Graduate Diploma on Child Protection (PGDCP) scholars, who are also employees of the FO 6, crafted and conducted the September 2 activities that are designed for children to build closer relationships, have opportunities to express themselves, and enjoy their fellowship.

“The team reached out to these children and did whatever we could to support them to rise above their pain and sufferings and ensure their safety and well-being. This can pave the way for them to learn, grow and thrive,” Chief of Policy and Plans Division (PPD) of DSWD FO 6 Luna Moscoso explained.

According to PPD Chief Moscoso, the activity was designed to help reduce the traumatic stress disorders that children experienced, which affected their day to day living when they were still not in the center.

Activities such as “May Bagyo”, which tested their focus, concentration, listening skills and decision making, and “Catch Me Exercise, Trust Walk and Circle Formation” were conducted to build their self-confidence, trust each other and develop a strong support system with their peers.

The children also participated in the “Tree of Happiness” where two groups were formed to decorate their trees, allowing them to express their feelings, dreams, hopes, and identify the people who gave them support and love.

“There is hope and they have beautiful dreams. If we nurture the dreams of children, the world will be blessed,” Chief Moscoso said.

The RRCY is a residential facility for CICL aged 15 years to below 18 years with suspended sentences. The center aims to provide the   residents with the ambiance of a home for their reformation and enable them to restore their social functioning and live a normal life through reintegration/reunification to their families and become productive members of the  community and society.

The PPD chief said the RRCY provides 24-hour individual and group care, treatment, and rehabilitation services under the guidance of trained staff.

Currently, the DSWD has RRCY in the National Capital Region (NCR), Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR ), Regions 1 (Ilocos Region), 2 (Cagayan Valley), 3 (Central Luzon), 5 (Bicol Region), 6 (Western Visayas), 7 (Central Visayas), 8 (Eastern Visayas), 9 (Zamboanga Peninsula), 10 (Northern Mindanao) 11 (Davao Region), 12 (SOCCSKSARGEN) and Caraga. #

“The team reached out to these children and did whatever we could to support them to rise above their pain and sufferings and ensure their safety and well-being. This can pave the way for them to learn, grow and thrive,”paliwanag ni Chief of Policy and Plans Division (PPD) of DSWD FO 6 Luna Moscoso.

“There is hope and they have beautiful dreams. If we nurture the dreams of children, the world will be blessed,” sabi pa ni Chief Moscoso.
