The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) is pleased with the result of the latest Pulse Asia’s Ulat ng Bayan Survey, indicating that 57 percent of Filipinos have positive opinion on the efforts of the Marcos administration in responding to the needs of calamity-hit areas.
DSWD Asst. Secretary for Disaster Response Management Group (DRMG) Irene Dumlao attributed the favorable approval rating to the consistent coordination of local government units (LGUs) and other concerned national government agencies (NGAs) in times of calamities and disasters.
“As part of the government’s disaster responders, we are immensely grateful for the positive opinion and appreciation given by the public. Rest assured that we embrace your favorable rating not just as a badge of honor, but as a driver to continuously improve our mandate,” Asst. Secretary Dumlao, who is also the DSWD spokesperson, said on Monday (December 23).
The nationwide survey released on December 21 was conducted from November 26 to December 3 using face-to-face interviews based on the response of 2,400 participants from 18 years old and above.
The DSWD is the vice-chair for Disaster Response and Early Recovery Cluster of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) and the lead agency for Camp Coordination and Camp Management (CCCM) and Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) Protection Clusters as well as the Food and Non-Food Item Cluster.
Given these tri-cluster responsibility, the DSWD is given the huge task of setting a quality-standard and well-coordinated humanitarian response action, according to the agency spokesperson.
Asst. Secretary Dumlao underscored the role of the Buong Bansa Handa in enhancing the DSWD’s capacity in meeting the needs of families in various disaster-stricken areas, in line with the directive of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.
“Our intensified prepositioning and replenishment of our relief supplies nationwide boosted our disaster operations. We can recall that these allowed us to meet the needs of our kababayan during the consecutive onslaught of Tropical Cyclones Kristine, Leon, Marce, Nika, Ofel and Pepito,” Asst. Secretary Dumlao pointed out.
Asst. Secretary Dumlao asserted that amid the overlapping and extensive impact of said cyclones, the government and private sector, were able to extend help through air, water, and land, and ushered a ‘whole-of-nation’ approach.
Into the DSWD’s ways forward to sustain the positive rating, Asst. Secretary Dumlao said the agency will continue strengthening its collaboration with LGUs, other national government agencies, and development partners to strengthen the disaster management capacity of the country.
Establishing more repacking centers and storage facilities also stands among the agency’s priorities.
“We now have close to 1,000 operational warehouses, hubs, spokes, and last mile storing facilities with 14 of these recently inaugurated in CALABARZON. However, we are actively eyeing to procure and establish more, particularly to heighten our aid delivery in disaster-stricken, and Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas or GIDA areas,” the DSWD spokesperson said.
