Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Secretary Rex Gatchalian observes the reading and Nanay-Tatay teacher sessions being conducted by college-tutors and youth development workers (YDWs) under the Tara, Basa! Tutoring Program at the Labangon Bliss Elementary School in Cebu City on Wednesday (July 3).

College-tutors were trained by the DSWD to conduct reading sessions for struggling and non-reader incoming Grade 2 beneficiaries of the program. YDWs on the other hand, conduct Nanay-Tatay teacher sessions for parents and guardians of elementary students.

The 2nd to 4th year college student-tutors will receive cash-for-work (CFW) based on the regional daily minimum wage rate for rendering tutoring and learning sessions.

Secretary Gatchalian, who was in Cebu province to lead the Walang Gutom 2027 Information Caravan, was accompanied by DSWD Field Office-7 (Central Visayas) Regional Director Shalaine Marie S. Lucero and Labangon Bliss Elementary School Master Teacher Nenita Saldua at the reading session.

The Tara, Basa! Tutoring Program is the DSWD’s reformatted educational assistance that creates a learning ecosystem, wherein college students will be capacitated and deployed as tutors and YDWs to help improve the reading proficiency of elementary students who are struggling to read or are non-readers. #
