Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Secretary Rex Gatchalian thanked the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for donating 1,000 relief boxes which were distributed to ‘Kristine’-hit residents in Marikina City on Wednesday (October 30).
In a short message during the aid distribution in Barangay Malanday, Secretary Gatchalian said the relief support to the city marks the first batch of the UAE’s humanitarian aid to the country.
“In total, 33,000 relief boxes from the UAE government will be distributed to Filipino families across the country who were severely-hit by Kristine,” Secretary Gatchalian said.

Secretary Gatchalian expressed his gratitude to the UAE government and lauded the Chairman of the Board of Directors of ERC, His Excellency (H.E.) Dr. Hamdan Musallam Al Mazrouei, and UAE Ambassador to the Philippines H.E. Mohamed Obaid Alzaabi for facilitating the humanitarian assistance.
“Alam ho natin na sunod-sunod po ang bagyo pero hindi tayo nag-iisa sa ganitong pagkakataon… meron tayong mga matatalik na kaibigan mula sa United Arab Emirates na kumakalinga sa atin. At dahil dyan, nais natin silang pasalamatan at patuloy na pinagyayabong ang pakikitungo ng Pilipinas sa ating mga kaibigan na tulad ng United Arab Emirates,” the DSWD chief pointed out.
Secretary Gatchalian pointed out that the UAE has been consistent in helping out the Philippines in times of emergencies, citing the several humanitarian aid the country has received from the foreign partner since last year.
“Every time na meron tayong malaking pagsubok at sakuna, nagpapasalamat ang DSWD at ang mga biktima sa United Arab Emirates kasi they never cease to help us. Matatandaan niyo last year, nung pumutok yung Mayon, nagpadala sila ng goods at noong nagkaroon tayo ng walang tigil na pag-ulan at landslide sa Davao De Oro,” Secretary Gatchalian said.
The DSWD chief also mentioned the UAE’s assistance in response to Super Typhoon Carina where they donated 8-tons of various relief goods.
