The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), IBM Philippines, Inc. and Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) today signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA)  to develop a tool that can prescribe pre-positioning and allocation schemes for disaster relief supplies, and to demonstrate initial analysis of different disaster impact and response scenarios.

The Pre-positioning and Allocation of Relief Supplies–GIS-Based Support System for Disaster Preparedness and Response project funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) involves data gathering of affected populations of past typhoons, evaluation and consolidation of reports from workshops to gather feedback through software demonstration and focus group discussions.

The parties will also conduct simulation of a range of disaster scenarios such as different typhoon paths and strengths, and different sets of available transportation and storage resources.

DSWD Assistant Secretary Vilma Cabrera said that, “This tool is important during times that there are forthcoming disasters, especially in providing information, data and facts on relief operations. This system will speed up the provision of accurate information to people, and others who works on disaster operations​”.  ###
