More than 4,000 individuals experiencing involuntary hunger have been fed by the Walang Gutom Kitchen since the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) launched the food bank in Pasay City last December 16.
“We were able to feed a total of 4,452 individuals experiencing involuntary hunger from its launching date up to December 24,” Asst. Secretary Irene Dumlao, who is also the DSWD spokesperson, said on Thursday (December 26).
Asst. Secretary Dumlao said the DSWD was able to assist the families in street situations (FISS) and those experiencing involuntary hunger through the donations from hotels, restaurants, and other establishments.
“We are very grateful for the food donations from the different establishments. We would like to reiterate that the food we are offering is not discarded food or ‘pagpag’ as some people call it,” the DSWD spokesperson said.
Asst. Secretary Dumlao asserted that the food served in the Walang Gutom Kitchen is always fresh, delicious, and healthy, as she expressed the DSWD’s gratitude to the individuals who volunteered to serve in the Pasay City soup kitchen.
“We are equally thankful to the volunteers who, even on holidays, spent their time serving food to the beneficiaries of the kitchen,” Asst. Secretary Dumlao said.
The Walang Gutom Kitchen is open from December 26 to 31 and will be temporarily closed on January 1, 2025, New Year’s Day.
The Walang Gutom Kitchen is the latest innovation of DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian aimed at addressing involuntary hunger and reducing food wastage by turning donated surplus food from hotels, restaurants, and organizations into hot, nutritious meals for hungry individuals. (YADP)
